Caring Classrooms

Kindergarten: The students will be visited by the director of the County Area on Aging to learn about the Meals on Wheels program.  The students will then make a special monthly greeting that will be delivered with the meals throughout the year.

1C, 1L: The first graders will practice being good citizens by keeping the school grounds clean.  The students will help keep the inside of the building trash free and keep the handrails and doorknobs germ free.  They will also clean up litter on the playground and church grounds.

2C: The second graders will be reaching out to Lourdeshouse which provides care, counseling, supplies and shelter to pregnant women.  The students will provide a baby item each month to fill a Pack and Play.  They also will be making hand knotted fleece baby blankets for the clients at Lourdeshouse.

2L These creative students will be making cards and writing letters to the parish homebound.

3C is going to help hurricane victims of Katrina and Ike. This project will involve things like writing letters, creating puzzles and games out of everyday items, doing some chores at home to work for money to buy items for kits containing personal care items.

3L: The students have adopted the soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  They will be praying for them daily, sending cards, writing letters, and sending them small treats.  Members of the parish are encouraged to provide the name, address, and a picture (if available) of any family member currently deployed.  Please send the information in an envelope to the school office, marked to the attention of Mrs. Albers.

4C and 4L The fourth graders will continue to make rosaries and will send them to needy communities and make them available to parishioners in the narthex of our church.  These enterprising students will also be cooking a meal each month for local soup kitchens.

5C and 5L  These students are reaching out to the elderly this year in their caring classroom role as they visit and join in activities with the residents of Ecumenical Community, a local nursing home.

6C and 6L  .  The 6th graders will be joining the St. Catherine Laboure Parish Coffee Cup each month to help set-up and/or clean up after the meals, play games, share home-made treats, sing, pray, deliver holiday cards, etc.

They will also write to mission pen pals who live in a mountainous region of Panama, and send them needed school supplies and personal care items.

7C: The 7th graders will keep the parish sick and shut-ins in their daily prayers as well as provide notes of encouragement and concern.  They will also make crafts for the Eucharistic Ministers to take on their home visits.

7L: This year 7L is inviting veterans to come and speak to us about their experiences in wars past and present.  To facilitate this They have asked the local (Union Deposit) VFW and the American Legion (Derry St.) if they could ask their members for volunteers to visit us. Both organizations will bring it up at their next meeting and provide a list of people willing to visit us.

s8L:  The 8th graders will promote the yearly HCA Mission collection throughout the school.

Please consider supporting our school by donating an item for our silent or live auctions, placing an ad in our program booklet, becoming a corporate sponsor and/or attending this exquisite event on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2009, at the Hilton Harrisburg.   Please fill and return this form if you can help.
